Kyle Shanahan ‘[couldn’t] Care Less’ About Brandon Aiyuk’s Meeting With 49ers
Brandon Aiyuk returned to the San Francisco 49ers’ offices on Friday to meet with the franchise and presumably negotiate a resolution that will allow him to continue his NFL career.
Just don’t expect Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan to care.
The 49ers wide receiver and agent Drew Rosenhaus arrived at the 49ers’ business offices via helicopter a little before 3 p.m. local time on Friday to meet with the team.

“I’m feeling great, feeling healthy,” Aiyuk told media members at the facility. “Long recovery process, long rehab process, but I’m back to 100 percent. Looking to get reinstated into the National Football League.”
Aiyuk hasn’t played in over two years since tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee in an October 2024 game. His relationship with the franchise soured after that. The 49ers placed him on the reserve/left squad list in December, which means he doesn’t get paid or count against the team’s roster limit. The 49ers have said they want to recoup around $13 million in bonus money paid to Aiyuk, per The Athletic.
Rosenhaus filed a reinstatement request with the NFL on Oct. 27, but the league hasn’t done anything.
“He’s healthy and ready to get back to work,” Rosenhaus said Friday. “Don’t really have any comment about where he’s going to play. We’ll keep that between us and the Niners. Obviously, we’re here with all the right intentions.”
If Aiyuk comes off the reserve/left squad list, the 49ers will have to activate, trade, or release him. That first one is essentially a non-factor at this point, as both general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have said the 28-year-old will never play for San Francisco again.
To drive that point home, Shanahan was asked what he expected from Aiyuk’s meeting during his own press conference around the same time.
Q: What would you like to see with Brandon Ayuk today?
Kyle Shanahan: “I could care less.” https://t.co/f1vRvLzjBv

“No clue. Your guess is as good as mine,” Shanahan told reporters Friday. “I [couldn’t] care less.”
“It’s been over for our football team for a long time,” he added. “So I don’t hear much except questions about him today, but not too big of a deal for me to answer.
“I look at this as zero to do with our football team. Anything that has zero to do with our football team, especially during the season, I will give zero thoughts to.”
Aiyuk’s drama with Shanahan and the 49ers goes back to before his injury, and despite his strong play over five seasons, they’re likely desperate to close the door on this chapter.
