On January 26, the remains of police officer Ran Gvili, held in Gaza for over 840 days, were recovered. Gvili, 24, had been killed on October 7, 2023, while fighting Hamas militants, though he was off duty and recovering from an injury at the time. His remains were escorted by a police convoy from the Gaza border to Israel’s Forensic Institute in Tel Aviv. The recovery marks the completion of the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan and has raised hopes for a limited reopening of the Rafah Crossing between Gaza and Egypt, a key condition of U.S. peace efforts. Gvili’s mother, Talik, expressed gratitude to Trump, his envoys, and Israeli leaders, while friends and neighbors gathered at the family home in Meitar to honor him.
