Macron Appoints Christophe Leribault As New Louvre Chief After $102m Jewelry Heist
French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Christophe Leribault as the new director of the Louvre, tasking him with restoring confidence in the world’s most-visited museum following a $102 million jewelry heist and months of staff unrest. Leribault, currently head of the Palace of Versailles and a respected 18th-century art historian, will replace Laurence Des Cars, whose resignation was accepted this week.
The Louvre has faced mounting challenges, including repeated strikes over pay and working conditions, water leaks, and a ticket-fraud investigation that allegedly siphoned more than 10 million euros over a decade. A state auditors’ report also urged management to prioritize long-overdue security and infrastructure upgrades over new acquisitions.
Leribault’s appointment signals a reset for the iconic Paris institution, home to Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, as authorities aim to strengthen security and modernize operations.
