Incredibly frustrating report from Mandu’s Danny Lee:

“As if running a small business isn’t hard enough these days, we have to deal with this nonsense. At 6:15 this morning a small group (hard to pick out on our cameras) threw an object through the main front window of Mandu. That’s it – nobody came in, nothing was stolen, etc. Just breaking a window to break a window.

We will get this window replaced and if we have to have an ugly board up for a day or two, so be it. The most important thing is that nobody was hurt and we are all safe.

It will take more than a group of idiots breaking a window to keep us from opening. However, if you’re reading this, please realize how tough it is for small businesses across this city and country right now. Most are barely hanging on, and something like this (especially on a Friday leading into a weekend) could potentially be the last straw. Unfortunately I have the experience of going through something like this enough times where we know how to handle things economically and move quickly in order to open, but the majority of small businesses owners do not.

We are living in tough times right now, but I am a notorious optimist. I believe in our city and our community. In fact, it wasn’t even building security that first let me know about what happened this morning, rather a message from a friend and regular.

What makes our city great is the vibrant symbiotic relationship between the DC community and independent small businesses. That relationship has strengthened bonds across cultures and helped create that unique charm this city has always had, and why I’ve always been proud to call DC home.“
