Micron’s Long-term Returns Crushed The S&p 500. Does The Recent Drop Matter?

Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) has given back 15.44% in a month. It fell from $1,082.10 on September 25 to $915.07 this morning. Long-term returns remain far ahead of the index despite the drop.
A Boom-and-Bust Memory Maker Became an AI Bottleneck
For most of the decade, Micron traded as a cyclical. It gained from the memory boom of 2017 and 2018, fell in the 2019 bust, and rallied on the pandemic expansion. Then it posted losses and inventory write-downs in the 2022 and 2023 downturn (per company history).
High-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI accelerators from Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) changed the business. Fiscal 2026 revenue reached $133.19 billion, up 256.3%. Fiscal Q4 non-GAAP gross margin hit 87.0%, compared with 45.7% a year earlier. Micron now holds 26 strategic customer agreements that run through 2030, and management says it has “no line of sight to when supply and demand balance.”

Micron led the index at every horizon, and most of that gap opened recently. The stock began 2026 at $285.19 and is up 220.87% year to date. Ten-year holders also had to stay put through the losses of the 2022 and 2023 downturns, when the AI return was still invisible.
Timing still matters. A $1,000 purchase at the September 25 high is worth $845.60 today.
Two Signals That Will Decide Micron’s Next Move
That optimistic view holds if memory supply stays tight through 2028, as management expects. It falls if AI infrastructure spending slows, because the memory layer would feel that slowdown first.
Bull case: Fiscal Q1 2027 guidance calls for $61.5 billion in revenue, plus or minus $1.5 billion, and non-GAAP EPS of $38.15. More than 75% of shipments are committed for the year. On fiscal 2026 non-GAAP EPS of $75.52, the stock trades at about 12 times trailing earnings.
Bear case: Memory stocks can look cheapest near the peak of a cycle. Capex reached $30.7 billion in fiscal 2026, and Samsung and SK Hynix are competing for HBM4 share. Recent coverage also shows Micron pushing back on a Chinese memory threat.
The data leans bullish. Customer agreements and a guide to an even stronger fiscal 2027 make this month’s decline look like a sentiment reset, while the earnings trend still points up. Watch HBM4E pricing and any changes to hyperscaler capex plans next.
