Moderna‘s (NASDAQ:MRNA) push into cancer treatment is drawing heavy buying as a closely followed melanoma presentation approaches. Shares of Moderna are up 7% to $241.89 during the trading session, running ahead of larger drugmakers and the healthcare sector fund.
Meanwhile, Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) stock is up 5% to $61.55. Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) stock is up 2% to $30.12, in line with the broader healthcare group.
Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer are far larger drugmakers. A single trial readout therefore carries more weight for Moderna stock, which has a market value of $96.2 billion.
Melanoma Data Heads to Madrid
Merck (NYSE:MRK) is Moderna’s partner on the program, and its immunotherapy Keytruda supports the combination. The companies will present late-stage melanoma data on October 24 at the European Society for Medical Oncology congress in Madrid. A Moderna investor webcast will follow. That study tests intismeran autogene plus Keytruda against Keytruda alone after surgery.
Moderna and Merck previously announced improvements in recurrence-free and distant-metastasis-free survival, with overall survival still under evaluation. Five-year Phase 2b data debuted this year. Presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting, it showed a 49% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death with intismeran plus Keytruda versus Keytruda alone. Management noted on its Q2 2026 earnings call that the Phase 3 study requires a minimum of 18 months of follow-up.
Healthcare Rally Outpaces the Dow
Moderna, Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer shares are all rising alongside a broad healthcare rally. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEARCA:XLV) is up 2% to $179.60. Among those names, Moderna stock is posting the largest gain by a clear margin.
For a broad-market comparison, the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:DIA) is up 0.9% to $523.65. Healthcare stocks are outpacing the Dow-tracking fund by a wide margin, with Moderna and Bristol Myers Squibb shares setting the pace.
Moderna stock made up just 0.4% of the healthcare fund’s net assets as of the latest report, versus 5.5% for Merck, 2% for Bristol Myers Squibb and 2.4% for Pfizer. That small size means the fund’s advance rests mostly on bigger names, which makes the outsized gain in Moderna stock stand out.
Pipeline Hopes Meet a Thin Revenue Base
Intismeran could become Moderna’s first cancer product. Management spoke during the call. They stated, “We have been establishing the manufacturing in Massachusetts in a dedicated facility that will be able to support launch.” The company also repeated its outlook for up to 10% revenue growth in 2026.
Moderna’s core business offers little buffer if the data disappoint. Its Q2 report showed revenue of $145 million and a net loss of $782 million, and the company projects year-end cash and investments of $4.7 billion to $5.2 billion. That leaves Moderna stock heavily dependent on pipeline wins.
Madrid Sets the Next Test for Moderna
A key question is whether the full data presented on October 24 match the improvements Moderna and Merck already announced. Another is whether Moderna management’s confidence holds up under questioning on the webcast.
Sharp moves in either direction are possible for Moderna shares once the detailed results arrive. A shortfall could pressure Moderna stock, while a clean confirmation could extend its run. It may be wise to keep one’s share position sizes small until the data arrives.
