Onitsha Market Shutdown: Soludo Should Be Sued – Lawyer, Maxwell Opara
An Abuja-based human rights lawyer, Maxwell Opara, has slammed Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State for shutting down Onitsha market.
Speaking during an interview on Tuesday on Arise Television, Opara said Soludo should be sued for such an executive order.
He described the action of the governor as trespass and violation of fundamental human rights.
Recall that Governor Soludo on Monday ordered an immediate closure of the Onitsha Main Market.
Reacting, the lawyer said, “The governor cannot come in and order the shut down of the market. He should be sued for giving such an order. Now, if the market people on their own decided to sit at home on Mondays, that is their business.
“Because the market and those private shops are people’s private property, and they are running their businesses with their money.
“So coming to lock it up because they refused to open the market on Mondays, I think, is executive recklessness and the governor should be sued, and the action should be filed against the governor for taking such a reckless decision.
“If somebody issued an order asking you to sit at home with a threat, you should report. What I mean by “you should report to the government is that these particular people are threatening us not to open our shop.”
