Pcloud Vs. Jottacloud

You’ve got files. They need to live somewhere safe, accessible, and, ideally, not expensive. Two names keep coming up in the European cloud storage conversation: pCloud and Jottacloud. Both promise security and convenience. But they take very different approaches to delivering on that promise.

So which one should you actually trust with your data?

About pCloud

pCloud launched in 2013 and is headquartered in Switzerland — a country with some of the world’s strictest privacy laws. Over a decade later, it has grown to more than 22 million users across way too many countries. pCloud stands out for one compelling reason: it offers lifetime cloud storage plans. Pay once, store forever. That’s a pitch almost no competitor can match. It also offer different functionalities which enhance your experience.

About Jottacloud

Jottacloud is a Norwegian cloud storage provider founded in 2008. It stores all data on servers in Norway, under Norwegian privacy law and EU GDPR regulations. For users who care about European data sovereignty, that matters.

Jottacloud’s biggest draw is its unlimited storage plan. At $11.99 per month, you can back up as much data as you want. That includes multiple devices, external hard drives, and NAS systems. For heavy users sitting on terabytes of photos and videos, that ceiling-free pricing is hard to ignore.

pCloud vs Jottacloud: Storage Plans and Pricing

This is often where decisions get made. Let’s look at both side by side.

pCloud Pricing:

Plan Storage Price
Free 10 GB $0
Premium 500 GB $4.99/month
Premium Plus 2 TB $9.99/month
Lifetime 500 GB 500 GB $199 one-time
Lifetime 2 TB 2 TB $399 one-time
Lifetime 10 TB 10 TB $1,190 one-time

Jottacloud Pricing:

Plan Storage Price
Free 5 GB $0
Home 1 TB (up to 5 users) $6.99/month
Unlimited Unlimited $11.99/month
Pro 10 TB 10 TB €29/month
Pro 50 TB 50 TB €149/month

pCloud’s lifetime plans are a genuine differentiator. Most cloud services lock you into subscriptions indefinitely. With pCloud, a one-time payment of $399 gets you 2 TB of storage for a life. Over five years, that works out to roughly $6.65 per month which is cheaper than most subscription tiers.

Jottacloud, on the other hand, wins on flexibility. The Unlimited plan at $11.99 per month removes the storage ceiling entirely. If you regularly shoot in RAW format or back up multiple devices, unlimited storage has obvious appeal.

Furthermore, pCloud’s free plan starts at 10 GB, while Jottacloud gives you only 5 GB. A small difference, but worth noting for new users.

Bottom line: pCloud wins on long-term cost efficiency. Jottacloud wins on raw storage potential.

Security and Encryption

Cloud security is a baseline requirement. Both services use AES 256-bit encryption at rest and secure transfer protocols in transit. But there ‘ a meaningful gap in their approaches.

pCloud offers zero-knowledge encryption through its pCloud Encryption add-on. Files stored in the Crypto folder are encrypted client-side before they ever leave your device. Even pCloud staff cannot access them. This add-on costs $49.99 per year or $150 as a lifetime purchase.

Jottacloud does not offer zero-knowledge encryption. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit with AES 256-bit and TLS 1.3. However, that means Jottacloud could theoretically access your files if legally compelled.

That said, Jottacloud operates under Norwegian law and GDPR. Norway has strong, independent privacy protections. The company also manages its own server infrastructure in-house. That, in itself, is a level of control few services can claim.

So the question becomes: do you trust encryption add-ons, Swiss law and GDPR, or Norwegian-managed infrastructure and GDPR?

Bottom line: pCloud wins on encryption depth.

Backup and Sync

Here’s where the two services diverge most sharply.

Jottacloud is built for backup. It supports automatic backup from computers, smartphones, external hard drives, and NAS devices — all under one plan. Plug in an external drive, and Jottacloud backs it up automatically.

pCloud handles sync and backup too, but its strength is the virtual drive experience. Files live in the cloud and appear locally without occupying disk space. It supports selective sync and automatic camera uploads from mobile. However, it does not natively back up external drives the way Jottacloud does.

For users running a “back up everything” strategy across multiple devices, Jottacloud’s approach is more thorough. For users who want seamless, always-accessible storage without filling their hard drive, pCloud’s virtual drive model is harder to beat.

Bottom line: Jottacloud leads on comprehensive multi-device backup. pCloud leads on the day-to-day storage experience.

File Sharing

Both services let you share files and folders via links. pCloud, however, offers more granular control. You can set password protection on shared links, define expiry dates, and revoke access at any time. This level of control suits users who regularly share sensitive documents.

Jottacloud supports link-based sharing and collaborative photo albums. However, its sharing capabilities are less robust than pCloud’s, especially for professional or business scenarios.

File Versioning

Accidentally deleted something? File versioning lets you roll back. Both services support it.

pCloud’s free plan includes 15 days of file history. Paid plans extend that to 30 days. An Extended File History add-on pushes the window all the way to 365 days. That kind of flexibility is valuable for anyone who works with evolving documents or creative files.

Jottacloud also offers file versioning, though the depth varies by plan.

Photo Management

Jottacloud has invested heavily in photo management. It features AI-powered photo search, letting you find images by subject or content without manual tagging. Crucially, Jottacloud never compresses or resizes uploaded images. Your photos stay at full resolution. For photographers or anyone preserving memories with care, that commitment is significant.

pCloud also supports photo uploads and even includes a built-in media player for streaming videos and music. Its mobile app handles camera backup. The service has an in-app photo editor, so you can add some final touches to your photos before you share them. The Photos gallery, arranges all you images in a timeline view. And, in case you fancy that, you can see your photos on a map, pinned to the location they were taken. pCloud is currently in the making of even more cool stuff related to photo management, but I’ll keep that as a surprise.
