Police Say Tanjung Rambutan Care Home Resident Was Tied, Beaten To Death

PETALING JAYA: The 54-year-old resident of a care home in Tanjung Rambutan, Perak, who died on Monday is believed to have been tied up, beaten and stomped on by fellow residents and a caretaker.

Perak police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin said initial investigations found the incident occurred late on Monday night after the victim allegedly became aggressive and disturbed other residents at the care home, Astro Awani reported.

"A caretaker is believed to have instructed that the victim be tied up before several other residents, together with the caretaker, assaulted and stomped on him," he told a press conference in Ipoh.

A post-mortem conducted by forensic specialists at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh confirmed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

The victim was one of 21 residents at the care home and had been placed there with his family's consent.

Alwi said five Malaysian men, comprising the caretaker and four residents aged between 35 and 55, were arrested to assist in the investigation.

They have been remanded for four days until Aug 8 and are being investigated for murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

According to Alwi, preliminary checks found that the care home had been operating since 2012.

While it was registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia as a business, the care home could not produce documents to show that it had a valid operating licence from the social welfare department, approval from the Ipoh City Council, or authorisation from the health ministry.

He added that the premises was also not equipped with closed-circuit television cameras.
