Quebec Shifts Focus Away From Canada Separatism Amid Canada-us Trade Talks
Ongoing trade talks between Canada and the U.S. have seemingly calmed Quebec’s talks of separatism.
Tariffs placed on Canada by Donald Trump’s administration have negatively affected operations for businesses across Canada, from the steel to the dairy industry.
In an X post on Aug. 18, Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said Quebec’s political fate “must not be hijacked by the upheaval of American politics, the outbursts of an unpredictable president or by a campaign of fear.”
Jonathan Kalles, former Quebec adviser to Justin Trudeau, says "Trump represents everything that Quebec has fought against for the last 60 years in terms of creating a modern, progressive society.”
Quebec Premier Christine Frechette says that the trade deal reached must protect Quebec’s key interests, including supply management, culture and the French language.
