When Pakistan introduced the Roshan Digital Account (RDA) initiative in 2020, it marked a pivotal shift in the country’s financial landscape. For the first time, non-resident Pakistanis (NRPs) could open and operate bank accounts entirely online, eliminating the need to visit domestic branches. This transformation has redefined accessibility, enabling Pakistanis across continents to manage their finances at home with the speed and convenience of global digital banking standards.

Over the years, the initiative has demonstrated remarkable trust and adoption. By June 2025, cumulative inflows into RDAs reached US$10.56 billion, driven by consistent diaspora participation, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The total number of accounts climbed to 831,963 by FY25, reflecting growth of more than 119,000 accounts in a single year. Even amid temporary fluctuations, such as a 9% dip in June 2025, RDAs maintained a robust 21% year-on-year growth in inflows, underscoring continued confidence in Pakistan’s financial ecosystem.

Within this national success, Faysal Bank Limited has emerged as a key contributor, particularly through its fully Shariah-compliant offering under Faysal Islami. The Bank’s digital RDA proposition includes current accounts structured under Qard contracts and savings accounts based on Mudarabah principles, catering to customers who prioritize Islamic financial solutions.

Faysal Bank’s digital onboarding framework allows NRPs to open accounts in multiple currencies, including PKR, USD, GBP, EUR, SAR, AED, CAD, and CNY, mirroring the versatility of global platforms. Its Faysal DigiBank app enables seamless management of fund transfers, bill payments, investment subscriptions, and repatriation transactions. This positions Faysal Bank not merely as a participant in the RDA ecosystem, but as a leader shaping the overseas Pakistani experience of Islamic banking.

Beyond personal banking, the Bank has expanded access for overseas entrepreneurs through the Roshan Business Value Account—one of the few digital business solutions available to majority-owned foreign entities led by NRPs or Pakistan Origin Card holders. These accounts facilitate cross-border payments, operational funding, and domestic transactions entirely online, empowering diaspora-led businesses to expand into Pakistan without physical presence.

Faysal Bank has further integrated Shariah-compliant financing solutions into the RDA ecosystem. Initiatives such as Roshan Apna Ghar and Roshan Apni Car offer home and auto financing via Diminishing Musharakah, enabling NRPs to purchase property and vehicles in Pakistan end-to-end digitally. Customers can also participate in Islamic Naya Pakistan Certificates (INPCs), which have already attracted US$799 million globally by January 2025, reflecting a strong preference for Shariah-aligned investment vehicles.

Charitable giving is another defining feature. Through the SBP’s Roshan Samaaji Khidmat platform, Faysal Bank’s customers can make donations and Zakat contributions to registered Pakistani charities from anywhere in the world. Complementing this, long-term planning options such as the Roshan Pension Plan further demonstrate the Bank’s commitment to the financial security of NRPs, from day-to-day transactions to retirement readiness.

The economic impact of RDAs is substantial. During FY25 alone, deposits into RDA accounts totaled US$2.308 billion, while US$1.55 billion was deployed domestically. By June 2025, cumulative repatriation reached US$1.811 billion, with domestic utilization at US$6.762 billion, highlighting the enduring economic linkage supported by diaspora participation and Shariah-compliant digital banking.

As Pakistan strengthens its digital infrastructure, the Roshan Digital Account program has become a blueprint for cross-border financial inclusion. With technology-driven, Shariah-compliant solutions from institutions like Faysal Bank, geography no longer limits financial participation. The RDA framework is poised to support a more connected, confident, and empowered global Pakistani community for years to come.
