About 10 residents were evacuated after a fire broke out in a HDB flat at Block 408B Fernvale Road on Tuesday (Aug 18) evening. In response to AsiaOne's queries, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the incident involved the contents of the unit's kitchen, adding that officers entered the unit forcibly to put out the fire using a water jet.A photograph of the incident shared by Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Victor Lye shows the kitchen of a sixth-floor flat covered in soot, with several appliances damaged by the fire.Lye, who was on his way back to Singapore after a day business trip to Kuala Lumpur, said he was notified of the situation and visited the block upon arriving. He revealed that a neighbour had called for SCDF assistance after a domestic helper, who lives above the affected unit, noticed smoke billowing out of its windows. The occupants of the affected unit told the first-term MP that there was no cooking and that they believe the incident may have happened due to a short-circuit at the kitchen's power point. The couple were not at home when the fire broke out, according to Lye.
