Seeking Advice Regarding My Current Financial Situation

Card image cap

This is my first time asking for financial advice on Reddit. I want to make sure I’m setting myself up for long term financial success. Here’s my current situation:

I’m 35 currently earning a $98K salary before bonuses, which average around $3K per quarter if I hit my sales goals. I also run a side business on Instagram that generates anywhere between $1,500 and $2,500 per month.

I own a multifamily property in Massachusetts with a mortgage of approximately $2,900. I purchased it in 2021 and locked in a 3% interest rate. It’s fully rented and currently generates enough to cover the mortgage, with about $1,600 left over each month.

I purchased a newly built single family home in February of this year 6.125% interest, where I now live with my wife, who is currently a stay-at-home mom, and our newborn daughter. The total mortgage payment is $3,800 per month.

I paid off my 2024 GLC300 which I was paying $880 a month for (had to in order to buy the 2nd house) and my only other major expenses are cell phones, groceries, and utilities.

I currently have approximately $103K in my employer-sponsored 401(k) and $35K in checking and savings for emergencies.

Honestly, I sometimes feel like I’m behind financially for my age when I see where others are in this subreddit. However, I also didn’t come from much. My parents were poor, and I grew up in public housing. I didn’t inherit anything and have worked hard to get to where I am today. That said, I wish I had known more about personal finance in my early 20s.

What changes would you start making today to put yourself in a position to retire comfortably by 60, or potentially sooner?

I’d also appreciate advice on opening an investment account with Fidelity (or whether you’d recommend another brokerage) so I can start investing in index funds.

Would you recommend contributing $1,000 per month, or should I start by investing $10K from my current savings? Should I open a regular brokerage account that allows me to withdraw money whenever I want, considering I already have a 401(k)?

I’m open to any advice or suggestions. I appreciate any guidance!
