A shared office space is not a private room.

In this story, a woman works in a shared office space, and her husband sometimes brings her to work.

There is a tiny break room meant for meetings and interviews, but he would often use it for sending emails or making phone calls.

Because the break room only had space for two people, she worried he was preventing others from using it.

AITA For Not Allowing My Husband to Use Shared Break Room for Work?

I rent a single office in a shared space with 4 other offices, all rented to individuals.

I signed the lease myself. It’s an office share under my name.

We have 1 single break room and 1 waiting room with 4 chairs.

This is a small space. The break room is tiny, with 1 table big enough for two people to sit at maximum.

This woman runs a business with her husband.

My husband and I run a business.

I am the main person who uses the office because I consult with people.

He answers calls and schedules appointments from home since he was laid off.

When I am with people, for privacy reasons, I keep my door closed.

I am basically meeting with people from 9 am to 7 pm.

She noticed her husband started using the break room for 1 to 2 hours whenever he was there.

My husband once drove me to work, then asked if he could use the break room to write some emails.

I agreed. Now, whenever he drives me to work, he insists on sitting in the break room for at least 1 to 2 hours.

He calls clients and just does office work until I ask him to leave.

I have no idea how long he would have worked himself.

I told him I felt this was not an appropriate use of the very small break room.

I told him to be considerate of other people who may need to use the room for other purposes.

He says it’s okay, but she thinks it’s not appropriate.

No one has complained to him directly.

But he thinks this behavior is acceptable because it says “staff room,” and he’s my staff.

I asked him not to do this on a regular basis because it’s inconsiderate.

AITA for asking him not to use the break room as his office on a daily basis?

I feel it is selfish and inconsiderate to use the break room like this for several hours every day while I am already with clients.

I would go with OP on this. I mean, if it was just emails and phone calls, he could do them in any other room… or even at home.

She was using the room for meetings and consultations, so it’s more appropriate for her to occupy it than him.

Plus, someone else in the shared office could use it for other things, too, like meetings and interviews, right?

Finally, here’s a valid point.

A few emails don’t require renting a full office, especially if you’re not paying the rent.
