The race to put a satellite company inside Americans’ phone plans picked up speed. SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) stock trades at $140.02, up 4% in early action. The gain follows reports that SpaceX is in talks to buy Boost Mobile from EchoStar (NASDAQ:ECHO) or gain access to its wireless network as part of its push to build out Starlink Mobile.

SpaceX stock is still down 7% over the past month despite the rebound. Both companies have yet to confirm a deal, and the financial terms and structure haven’t been disclosed.

Boost Mobile Talks Could Give SpaceX a Ground Network

The Washington Post first reported the talks, and the story was moving satellite and telecom stocks on November 2. Boost Mobile already has network agreements with two national carriers, including T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS). Combining that terrestrial access with SpaceX’s satellite constellation could create a hybrid network able to compete more directly with the big U.S. carriers.

These talks build on SpaceX’s October agreement. The agreement to buy nationwide low-band spectrum licenses still needs Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval and is expected to close in the first half of 2027. SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell spoke on the August 4 earnings call. She said she expects Starlink Mobile to “acquire quite a few” customers from T-Mobile and its national rivals.

Starlink’s existing base gives SpaceX a head start. The company reported over 13.6 million Starlink consumer subscribers worldwide. New Street Research estimates Starlink has about 4 million U.S. broadband customers, up from its May estimate of 2.7 million.

AST SpaceMobile Slides as EchoStar Edges Higher

AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ:ASTS) stock is at $39.33, down 4%. A SpaceX with its own U.S. mobile network would be a tougher rival for AST SpaceMobile’s direct-to-device service, and that may help explain the decline. Over the past month, AST SpaceMobile stock has fallen 33%.

EchoStar stock is at $98.08, up 1%. That builds on a 10% gain over the past month. As Boost Mobile’s parent, the company sits on the other side of the reported talks. Chairman and CEO Charles Ergen noted on EchoStar’s August 3 earnings call that the company has “a fair amount of flexibility contractually regarding M&A or partnering with people.”

Boost Mobile Could Offer SpaceX a Route Around T-Mobile

T-Mobile’s management keeps SpaceX at arm’s length. On T-Mobile’s October 28 earnings call, CEO Srini Gopalan ruled out SpaceX as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), meaning a carrier that rents capacity on another company’s network. Gopalan said “we don’t really see the room for an MVNO for satellite or SpaceX in that context.”

Resale is a different story for Gopalan. “If it’s a complementary product, I’m very happy to look at a resale arrangement, which is exactly what T-Satellite was,” he stated. T-Satellite runs on over 650 Starlink satellites and costs $10 a month as an add-on, per TheStreet.

A Boost Mobile deal could give SpaceX a path around that refusal by bringing terrestrial network access in-house, and having that access might let Starlink Mobile sell directly to consumers instead of depending on T-Mobile’s terms.

SpaceX’s All-in-One Model Sets It Apart From Rivals

SpaceX combines launch, satellite broadband and AI compute in one vertically integrated company, so it can put its own Starlink Mobile satellites in orbit on its own rockets. AST SpaceMobile is a pre-commercial pure play on satellite-to-smartphone service that relies on partnerships with wireless carriers, while EchoStar is a spectrum holder and Boost Mobile’s parent, with much of its value tied to licenses and its wireless brand. Rocket Lab (NASDAQ:RKLB) is building a launch and space systems business with its own push into satellite services; RKLB stock is down 1% to $54.05.

What’s Next for SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile Ambitions

SpaceX now faces the question of whether the EchoStar talks produce a signed Boost Mobile deal with disclosed terms. Bulls can point to fast Starlink growth and an growing spectrum portfolio that might turn SpaceX into a fourth national wireless carrier.

The bears, however, see an unconfirmed deal, a spectrum purchase still waiting regulatory approval and the heavy capital spending a carrier expansion demands. A cautious approach to SPCX stock could make sense until the outcome of the Boost Mobile talks resolves.
