Stellantis Pilots Solar-powered Ev Charging Solution In Morocco

Agadir – Stellantis has launched a one-year pilot project in Morocco to test an autonomous solar-powered charging station for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. 

The automaker developed the charging solution through its Star*Up intrapreneurship program, which allows employees to turn innovative ideas into business solutions. 

Stellantis installed the first station at Motor Village Bouskoura, the company’s headquarters in Morocco, in partnership with Solar Power, a local renewable energy company. 

The pilot will test the technology under real-world conditions and gather customer feedback to guide potential future deployments, particularly in areas where access to charging infrastructure remains limited.

“This partnership allows us to test a truly autonomous, off-grid model in the conditions where it is most relevant, the remote and underserved areas of Morocco,” said Imad El Idrissi, CEO of Solar Power.

The Stellantis model combines a photovoltaic canopy with an integrated battery energy storage system. It can charge up to eight plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) or three battery electric vehicles (BEVs) per day.

The system features four AC charging points that can provide up to 19 kilowatts of power. Its battery storage system stores excess solar energy, allowing the station to provide charging during periods without sunlight.

Stellantis said the storage system uses repurposed batteries from its micromobility operations, adding a circular economy component to the project.

The station also includes two standard 230-volt outlets for charging micromobility vehicles. Stellantis said the Fiat TRIS, for example, can charge from 20% to 80% in around four hours through one of the outlets.

Stellantis further explained that the design could allow charging infrastructure to be deployed in locations such as logistics platforms, remote work sites, hospitality establishments, and rural communities. 

The project originated with a Stellantis engineer based in Morocco, who developed the concept through the Star*Up program.

The company said the initiative combines renewable energy, energy storage, reused batteries, and employee-led innovation to develop charging infrastructure for areas where conventional grid-connected solutions may be difficult to deploy.

The results of the one-year pilot will help Stellantis and Solar Power assess the technology’s performance and determine potential applications for expanding the solution in Morocco and the wider region.

“The results of this pilot project will directly guide decisions regarding the locations and 

methods of deploying this technology on a larger scale in the region,” El Idrissi concluded.

The pilot comes as Morocco strengthens its position in the eclectic vehicle industry. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) identified the country as an emerging destination for the EV investment, citing its growing manufacturing in battery production investments. 

Morocco attracted about $3.3 billion in foreign direct investment in 2025, while its industrial ecosystem and renewable energy strategy continue to foster the expansion of EV related manufacturing.
