Stop Innovating. Start Inventing. | Steve Anderson | Tedxbackbay
Playing it safe” can leave us perfecting something the world no longer needs. Steve Anderson, an expert in risk, challenges us to move beyond improving what exists (innovation) and start asking what should exist that doesn’t (invention). Drawing on Amazon’s failed experiments, unexpected possibilities for AI, and a deeply personal story, he explores how “Successful Failure” can help you create what the world needs but doesn’t have… yet. Your competitors are following best practices. That means they're already two years behind. What would it look like to grow your business like Amazon instead?
That question is what drives everything I do.
I spent years as a speaker and consultant on business technology and growth. What I discovered — and what most people miss — is that Amazon's success isn't about size, resources, or luck. It's about a system. A repeatable, scalable growth system that Jeff Bezos built and documented in his own words across 21 years of annual letters to shareholders.
I decoded that system in The Bezos Letters: 14 Principles to Grow Your Business Like Amazon — a WSJ and USA Today bestseller. The core insight: Bezos organized Amazon's growth around four cycles — Test, Build, Accelerate, and Scale. Any business, at any size, can apply those same cycles with intention.
As a keynote speaker, I translate those principles into strategies business owners can act on — not someday, but the week they get home. I've delivered this message to thousands of leaders across North America, and the response is consistent: it fundamentally changes the way they think about growth.
More recently, I've been applying that same lens to AI. I'm not interested in AI as a concept — I'm interested in AI as a growth tool. As an AI Strategist, I help business owners use artificial intelligence the way Bezos used invention: with intention, a clear system, and a direct connection to business results. The same principles that made Amazon relentless? AI accelerates them.
Here's what 40+ years of working with business owners has taught me: the gap between good companies and great ones isn't capital, talent, or timing. It's mindset — specifically, the willingness to test, learn, and scale with purpose rather than caution. That's what Bezos did. That's what the best business owners I know are doing right now.
If you're ready to grow your business like Amazon — follow along. I share weekly insights on Amazon-style growth, AI strategy, and what it actually means to go beyond best practices.
