Crypto-linked equities are outpacing the tape Friday morning as Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) trades at $80,888.81, up 5.5% over the past 24 hours. Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) stock is up 12% to $148.55 in Friday morning trading. Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN) shares are climbing 11% to $192.43, with both names outrunning the coin itself.
The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is down 0.1%, marking a soft session for the wider tape. The iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (NASDAQ:IBIT) is up 6%, tracking Bitcoin’s overnight advance. That divergence puts today’s rally in a single corner of the market rather than across the whole session, and it means the leverage embedded in equity proxies is doing extra work.
Short Squeeze Powers the Move
Bitcoin rose as traders moved into risk-on positioning, looking past the failure of the CLARITY Act in the Senate this week and past the Federal Reserve’s recent rate increase. Nic Puckrin, founder of Coin Bureau, stated that once Bitcoin broke past its resistance level, short positions were liquidated and that pushed the price higher. Puckrin described the range Bitcoin is now entering as one where resistance is much stronger from here.
Crypto derivatives traders were heavily positioned in call options heading into the move, adding fuel once that level gave way. Strategy is the most sensitive equity in this cluster given the coin exposure carried on its balance sheet, which is why MSTR shares are moving faster than Bitcoin and Coinbase this morning. That leverage cuts both ways, and it explains why the same names sold off harder than the coin earlier in the year.
Regulatory Backdrop Helps Coinbase Directly
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said Thursday it is granting a five-year exemption allowing U.S. trading venues to offer tokenized stocks. That’s a direct tailwind for Coinbase, which earns fees on every listed venue it operates and now has a cleaner path to distribute tokenized equity products to its user base.
Coinbase chief executive Brian Armstrong asserted he now assumes the CLARITY Act is dead and that another path exists through the regulators, naming the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). A House of Representatives committee also advanced the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve bill on Thursday, and that measure still requires approval from the full House and the Senate.
None of that changes the coin sitting on Strategy’s balance sheet, so the regulatory piece is narrower for MSTR than the broader tape action would suggest. Strategy remains a treasury vehicle for Bitcoin, while the exemption is an operating win specifically for exchange venues that can now list tokenized instruments alongside spot crypto.
Bull and Bear Cases Diverge
Coinbase earns fees whichever way Bitcoin moves next, so a rebound in trading volumes flows straight through the transaction line and helps the subscription business retain engaged users. The bear case on Coinbase is that spot activity has been depressed for multiple quarters, and one squeeze doesn’t reset that trend on its own.
Strategy shares, on the other hand, are a leveraged claim on the coin itself, funded largely with issued equity that dilutes existing holders on the way up. The bull case shows up plainly in a session like this one, when the coin exposure marks higher and the treasury story writes itself. However, Strategy stock is still down 3% year to date (YTD) even after this month’s rebound, which tells you how deep the earlier drawdown went.
The split matters for how each name behaves from here. Coinbase can grow custody, subscription and distribution lines regardless of coin direction, while Strategy’s equity mostly re-prices with the coin itself. That’s a different risk profile for buyers of each stock, even on a session where they trade together.
What to Watch
Investors can watch for whether Bitcoin holds $80,000 into the weekly close, since a slip back below would take the leverage in Strategy stock straight down with it. The follow-through question for Coinbase is whether the regulatory tailwind translates into higher spot volumes and tokenized-product activity over the coming weeks.
Traders’ exposure to either name should be sized to the volatility this pair carries, not to today’s direction. Strategy stock and Coinbase shares both move on Bitcoin’s every wobble, so smaller positions and defined risk make more sense here than chasing a green session. Buyers who want pure coin exposure without the operating overlay can consider the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF as a cleaner vehicle.
