The Tennessee Titans are playing their final season in the current Nissan Stadium. The new Nissan Stadium will open in 2027, and while there are plenty of upgrades and changes for the fan experience, the players get some upgrades, too. They'll have updated training facilities and locker rooms, as well as play on a technologically advanced artificial turf.

There has been a great debate about NFL stadiums using artificial turf rather than real grass on the fields, but it's much more expensive to maintain and difficult to keep up with in indoor stadiums. Most NFL teams use turf because it is cost-effective, despite the players' insistence that there are more injuries on turf.

The NFLPA has advocated for teams to use grass fields for years, and the debate heated up in 2023 when Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles at MetLife Stadium. This has led to The Athletic releasing a list of how many games each team will play on turf in 2026.

As you can see, the Titans and New York Giants will both play the most games on a turf surface this season. If you look at the teams with the most games on the artificial surface, you'll see that the majority of them have a turf field at their home stadium. This is true for both the Giants and the Titans.

The Titans saw plenty of injuries in 2025, losing Calvin Ridley to a broken fibula, Mike Brown and Tyjae Spears both missing multiple weeks, Jalyn Armour-Davis tore his Achilles, and more. Not all of those injuries happened at home, but most of the lower-body, non-contact injuries occurred on artificial turf.

Despite the understanding that synthetic surfaces are harder on a player's body, NFL owners are in no hurry to change their fields to grass. It's expensive, and it's difficult to maintain, making the artificial turf a better business decision.
