Texas High School Football: Five Houston-area Games To Watch For Week 2

Week 1 produced several statement victories across the Houston area, and the second week of action brings another compelling slate of non-district matchups. Four state-ranked Class 6A teams are involved in two of the games below, while Randle star Landen Williams-Callis enters Thursday night with a chance to make Houston-area history. Here are five games to watch in Week 2.

Westfield (1-0) at Randle (1-0)

When/where: 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Traylor Stadium

What to know: The record watch continues for Randle running back Landen Williams-Callis, who is just one touchdown shy of tying the Houston-area career record. He rushed for 230 yards and two touchdowns during the Lions' 20-14 victory over South Oak Cliff last week and will look to keep his team unbeaten against another tough opponent in the home opener. While Williams-Callis was the catalyst for the offense, the Randle defense rose to the occasion against SOC, limiting the Golden Bears to just 145 total yards and 3.7 yards per play. The Lions held SOC to a 27.3% completion rate in the passing game and just 3.1 yards per carry on the ground. That said, the matchup against Westfield could be another low-scoring game. The Mustangs opened the season with a 16-10 victory over Heights. They weren't especially productive offensively, but the defense was lights-out. Westfield limited Heights to 145 total yards and 2.8 yards per play and collected five sacks. Three of those sacks came from senior Talib Foster, who also had two of the Mustangs' three forced fumbles. This will be the first meeting between the programs, and Randle will attempt to keep its 26-game regular-season winning streak intact.

Klein Collins (1-0) at Willis (1-0)

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday, Yates Stadium

What to know: Klein Collins returned just six starters this season, but the Tigers have high expectations regardless of who's in the lineup. They took care of business in their opener with a 42-21 victory over Tompkins, piling up more than 400 yards of total offense. Senior quarterback Brylon Jefferson was nearly perfect against the Falcons, completing 9 of 10 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Willis also received a strong performance from its quarterback last week as sophomore Linc Frazier passed for 411 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. With the graduation of Mr. Texas Football Jermaine Bishop Jr., the Houston area's all-time leading receiver, the Wildkats needed players to step up at that position this season. Senior Parker Stephenson answered the call in Week 1 with 11 catches for 200 yards as Willis rolled to a 38-0 victory over Magnolia, a co-district champion last year. It marked the first shutout for the Wildkats since the third game of the 2025 regular season. Willis, which reached a regional final, suffered a 42-13 loss to Klein Collins last year. The Tigers rushed for 269 yards in that game and intercepted Frazier twice. The series is tied 2-2 since 2021, with Klein Collins winning the past two meetings. The teams combined for 22 wins last season.

Shadow Creek (1-0) at Ridge Point (1-0)

When/where: 7 p.m. Thursday, Mercer Stadium

What to know: Shadow Creek scored one of the most impressive victories in the state last week with a 24-14 home victory over a Summer Creek team that was No. 5 in the Class 6A preseason rankings. The Sharks did most of their damage in the first quarter and held a 21-0 lead at halftime. What really stood out was how the defense performed against a Summer Creek passing offense that features one of the best quarterback-receiver combinations in the area. Shadow Creek limited Bulldogs quarterback Noah Spinks, a North Carolina commit, to a 41.2% completion rate and intercepted him twice. The Sharks also limited Summer Creek's top weapon, Texas Tech commit Benny Easter Jr., to just four catches for 23 yards. Texas commit Brandon Sherrard had two interceptions for Shadow Creek. Sophomore sensation B.J. LaFell had a big game offensively, including a dazzling highlight-reel run in which he avoided several defenders on his way to the end zone. Ridge Point, meanwhile, also put an impressive tally in the win column with a 29-26 road victory over previously No. 10-ranked Dickinson. Quarterback Brody Bartee passed for 417 yards, and receivers John Rangel, Caiden Lawrence and Suhaib Ramseur all showed off their big-play ability. This will be the first meeting between Ridge Point and Shadow Creek, which are ranked 11th and 12th, respectively, in this week's Class 6A state rankings.

C.E. King (1-0) at Cypress Ranch (1-0)

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday, Cy-Fair FCU Stadium

What to know: Cypress Ranch turned in a strong defensive performance during its 24-7 victory over Hightower last week, holding Oklahoma State quarterback commit Carson White to just six completions and 30 yards. The Mustangs got their biggest offensive boost from the running game, where three-star recruit Khristian White led the charge with 127 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. C.E. King also had plenty of success running the ball, piling up 327 yards and averaging 13.6 yards per attempt. The Panthers have a deep stable of talented ball carriers, including A'Rhiyan Montgomery, who led the team with 90 yards and a touchdown on just four carries during a 70-10 victory over Conroe. Triston Willis and Antwon Sanders each scored twice, while Dillon Mitchell led the way in the passing game with 115 yards and a touchdown. After averaging more than 50 points per game last season, C.E. King remains one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the state. But the defense also showed its prowess against Conroe with nine tackles for loss, four sacks and three forced fumbles. This will be the Panthers' first matchup against Cypress Ranch. C.E. King is ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, while the Mustangs moved up three spots to No. 18. These two programs combined for 23 wins last year.

Yates (1-0) at Madison (0-1)

When: 6 p.m. Saturday, Butler Stadium

What to know: The Southside Classic will feature two teams expected to be among the best in Houston ISD this season. Yates ran the table during the 2025 regular season, including a 34-8 victory over Madison. That win was bolstered by a 27-point second quarter, and the Lions never looked back as they held the Marlins to fewer than 200 yards of offense. Yates began this season with a 24-0 victory over Houston Sterling, thanks in large part to a stout defensive performance. The Raiders were able to muster only 73 total yards. Senior Jordan Simmons led the way offensively with 235 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. Madison, meanwhile, will be looking to rebound after a 27-26 loss to Clear Brook last week. The Marlins held a 20-10 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the Wolverines responded with 17 points in the final period to steal the win. Madison quarterback S.J. Battle had a solid outing with 211 passing yards and four touchdowns without an interception. He also added 52 rushing yards, while Juel Peterson had a pair of touchdown catches. Madison leads the series 9-6 since 2005, but Yates has outscored the Marlins 74-8 over the past two meetings. Madison last won the matchup in 2022.
