The Heart Behind Aunty Christina’s Nasi Lemak

PETALING JAYA: Six mornings a week, while most of Malaysia is still fast asleep, Christina Nicholas Aloysius is already hard at work in the kitchen.

She begins cooking at 3am, preparing a tempting spread for customers at Aunty Christina’s Nasi Lemak stall in Puchong. Behind every dish is something no recipe can teach: a genuine love for cooking.

“I’m very happy when I see my customers enjoying the food, leaving with a smile and telling me the food is nice,” Christina, 68, told FMT Lifestyle.

Her stall is a feast for the senses, with a generous selection that includes devil and kapitan chicken curry, stingray asam pedas, beef rendang, mutton curry, sambal sotong, and acar, among many others.

Christina’s love for cooking began long before she began selling nasi lemak in 1987. A self-taught cook, she collected recipes wherever she could find them and often prepared meals for her neighbours.

Their encouragement gave her the confidence to turn her passion into a business, first in Seremban and later in the Klang Valley.

Like many small-business owners, Christina’s journey was interrupted when the pandemic struck and her children persuaded her to stop operating the stall out of concern for her health.

“I missed cooking and serving my customers. I couldn’t stop thinking about when I’d be able to reopen,” said Christina, who is of Portuguese-Eurasian descent.

She returned in 2023 to the delight of her regulars, some of whom welcomed her back with hugs and eagerly took photos with her to share with others.

The early mornings feel worthwhile whenever customers tell her the food reminds them of their mother’s cooking - perhaps the greatest compliment a cook can receive.

Over the years, Christina has watched many of her customers grow up. Some who first visited as students still return whenever they are back in Malaysia after studying overseas.

“I love my customers. They are all very kind people. I plan to go on for as long as I can,” she said.

After sampling her cooking, it is easy to understand why so many keep returning.

This writer enjoyed a plate of nasi lemak with devil chicken curry and stingray asam pedas. Lightly tinted blue with blue pea flower, the fragrant rice pairs beautifully with the rich accompaniments.

The devil chicken curry features tender meat coated in a deeply flavourful gravy, while the fresh stingray soaks up the tangy, spicy asam pedas broth.

Crunchy ikan bilis, peanuts, a hard-boiled egg, kangkung, cucumber slices and sambal complete the deeply satisfying meal.

Customers can also opt for white rice or, for something more indulgent, pulut kuning or yellow glutinous rice.

Another standout is Christina’s mee rebus. Its thick, velvety potato-based gravy coats the noodles beautifully, while tender sambal sotong adds a spicy, savoury punch.

Beancurd, green chillies and a squeeze of calamansi lime provide a refreshing citrus lift, while crispy crackers on the side bring a welcome crunch.

Together, the ingredients create a memorable, flavour-packed bowl.

For something equally satisfying, try Christina’s creamy Nyonya laksa. The broth, made with chicken and prawn shells, is simmered for three to four hours to deepen the flavours before coconut milk is stirred in.

Freshly blended aromatics including onions, garlic, ginger and turmeric lend further fragrance and depth. Topped with tofu puffs, fresh prawns and egg, it makes for a hearty and comforting meal.

Before leaving, do not miss the curry puffs and fried popiah, and be sure to pick up a jar of Christina’s salted-fish pickle to bring home.

Ultimately, Aunty Christina serves food that is homely, heartfelt and full of flavour. It is the kind of meal that lingers in the memory long after the last bite - and one visit is unlikely to be your last.
