Touring A 30 Acre Lakefront California Ranch With Its Architect

It is always a privilege to study an architect’s mind, but it becomes even more intriguing when the subject is their own property. At Split Rock Ranch, Grant Kirkpatrick had 30 acres and multiple structures to shape into a personal expression of the California architecture we all love.

The contemporary barn house captures this beautifully. What was once an equipment shed has been transformed through expansive openings, large structural spans, a vaulted roof, and the tasteful use of oak, steel, and concrete. The board formed concrete creates meaningful architectural moments and anchors the home, from the fireplace in the great room to the kitchen’s dramatic back wall.

That same thinking carries through the lake houses, vineyard, and lake access. Nothing is treated as a separate element. Together, they create a complete experience that feels deeply connected to the hills of Paso Robles.

Being able to share the property with 20 of our viewers made the experience even more meaningful. I’m incredibly grateful to Grant, his family, and the entire KAA Design team for opening their doors and sharing the thinking behind such a special place.
