PETALING JAYA: When a fire destroyed his family home in Kota Bharu four years ago, Adnan Che Kar faced the daunting task of rebuilding his life from scratch.

Instead of giving up, the 52-year-old turned the setback into a fresh start.

Today, Adnan is known across the Kelantan capital for selling nasi lemak at just RM1 a packet – a price he has maintained since launching the business with his wife, Zubaidah Ismail, in May 2023.

The couple’s roadside stall on Jalan Mahmood has become a favourite among customers looking for an affordable breakfast.

“I went through a hard time after my house was destroyed in the fire,” Adnan told Bernama. “But when we’re tested, we learn to be more grateful for what we have and keep striving for halal rezeki.”

Adnan started out by supplying nasi lemak to several shops before opening his stall. He eventually decided to sell directly to customers after facing difficulties collecting payment.

“That is why my wife and I started selling by the roadside. Even though the profit isn’t much, at least we know the money from sales will go directly to us.”

The modest margins do not bother him. “For me, selling RM1 nasi lemak is not just for profit,” he said. “I see it as a small act of charity for the people.

“Even though the profit is small, I am grateful that I still have an income.”

Every day except Saturday, the couple prepares about 400 packets of nasi lemak topped with anchovies, cucumber, peanuts and a quarter of a hard-boiled egg.

They begin selling after dawn; most days, everything is gone before 11am.

The business has also attracted customers looking to give back. Adnan said individuals and organisations regularly place bulk orders for charitable distribution to mosque congregants, tahfiz students, and families in need.

“Alhamdulillah, the response has been very encouraging,” he expressed.

To support his family, Adnan also works as a taxi driver, making long-distance trips to Kuala Lumpur and Johor when needed. Despite the long hours, he remains committed to keeping breakfast affordable.

“I believe rezeki comes from Allah. As long as I can, I’ll keep the RM1 price for everyone,” he said.
