Trump escalated his trade confrontation with Canada on Monday, announcing plans to raise tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts, and steel to 50 percent beginning January 1, 2027. Trump accused Canada of imposing excessive tariffs on American agricultural products and blamed its trade policies for a large U.S. trade deficit. DETAIL: Trump also declared that Canada would no longer receive what he characterized as state-like treatment, backing away from his previous suggestion that it could become the 51st U.S. state. The announcement followed the administration’s decision Saturday to impose 50 percent tariffs on a range of Canadian imports, including beer, cheese, and electronics, after trade negotiations collapsed. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to retaliate with dollar-for-dollar tariffs on American steel, dairy products, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and other goods beginning September 8. Carney described the U.S. measures as an attack on Canada and said his government had the resources and plans needed to respond. Both governments have accused the other of making unreasonable demands, with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer saying Canada sought too many concessions while Carney argued Washington demanded too much and offered too little.
