US President Donald Trump has threatened to rename Canada’s Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’, as the trade tariffs row between the two countries continues.

In a video posted to his TikTok profile, Trump crossed out the words ‘Lake Ontario’ on a map and wrote ‘Lake America’ instead, having previously said that the move was under “serious consideration”.

Tensions remain high between the two nations, as Canada announced tariffs on what it said was $20bn worth of US imports in retaliation against new duties imposed by Washington.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he would match US tariffs “dollar for dollar, in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses”, after trade talks broke down over the weekend.

Lake Ontario would not be the first site to be renamed in Trump’s second term, after he signed orders to rename locations including the Gulf of Mexico as ‘The Gulf of America’ and Mount Denali as ‘Mount McKinley’.

Trump also added his name and likeness to a number of American cultural institutions, including the Kennedy Center and the US Institute of Peace.
