Trump Wants Canada To Stop ‘poisoning’ The Usa’s Air: ‘maybe They Should Pay’

President Donald Trump called on Canada to get its wildfire problem under control because the smoke is “poisoning” American citizens — and suggested USA’s northern neighbor should pay for the “damages” it has caused.

Trump talked about the wildfires while speaking to reporters on Sunday in front of Air Force One.

The president was asked if he had spoken to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney about the issue since he vowed on Friday to hold the country “responsible” for the fires. Trump confirmed they had a “good” conversation, but he wanted to see more done by the Canadians.

“It went good, but I told him, I mean you gotta stop these fires from coming in and poisoning our air. Our air’s been poisoned,” Trump said. “I have a good relationship with Mark Carney, but you know, we gotta stop the fires up there.”

Trump continued:

If we can help them we’ll help them. But maybe they should pay us some damages or something? Or we should do some tariffs?

But it was terrible. I mean, you had businesses closing — in particular, Michigan. If you look at Detroit, Michigan they had to close everything. They had to close car plants and a lot of other things.

The Detroit Free Press reported last week a “thick, hazy smoke” pushed temperatures into the triple digits inside Ford’s Michigan assembly plant, forcing dozens of workers to seek medical attention.

“I’ve never remembered this happening,” Trump added. “Over the last 4-5 years it started to take place. I never remember it happening before.”

Fox News reported Canada has been grappling with about 850 wildfires, which have led to issues in more than 20 states along the East Coast and in the Midwest.

Trump’s comments on Sunday come a few days after he threatened to raise tariffs on Canada due to the fires. The president spoke to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland following his appearance at the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina in New Jersey.
