Veteran defensive tackle Esean Carter has been cleared to play for UConn in its season opener on Saturday after initially being ruled ineligible by the NCAA, capping a stressful past few months for Carter and the football program.

UConn learned late Friday that the NCAA reversed its decision to bar Carter from playing. The NCAA originally ruled he had taken an impermissible redshirt season when he played for new UConn head coach Jason Candle at Toledo.

He is expected to take the field on Saturday with his teammates as they host FCS program Lafayette at noon at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

A look back at 2022

The issue with Carter’s eligibility concerned the 2022 season.

After taking his redshirt freshman season in 2021, Carter suffered a foot injury in 2022 that limited him to two games. He returned to play in 40 total games in the 2023-25 seasons, starting all 13 games in his final season and being named third-team all-conference in the Mid-American Conference. He recorded 36 tackles, three sacks, three tackles for loss and three quarterback hurries.

All along, Carter told Mike Anthony of CT Insider, he had been assured he would have a final year of eligibility in 2026. And when Candle left Toledo, Carter entered the transfer portal and quickly decided to follow him to UConn after talking to a few other teams.

Enrolling at UConn for the spring semester, he left his fiancée and their young son at home in Toledo, deciding that playing a final season could improve the future of his family.

He spent the summer in Storrs preparing for the season.

Already, the NCAA had started to question his eligibility, and Carter, 23, learned as the fall semester began that he couldn’t play this fall, per the report.

UConn appealed, with Candle and strength and conditioning director Brad Bichey submitting evidence that detailed a left plantar fascia strain. On Friday afternoon, just before the close of the business day, Carter and the school learned the NCAA had reversed its decision and will allow him to play.

A look ahead

The Huskies are on the eve of a challenging 2026 season. UConn is the only non-Power Four team to meet three Power Four opponents, with each of the games at home. Big Ten program Maryland comes to East Hartford on Sept. 12, followed by Atlantic Coast Conference teams Syracuse (Oct. 3) and North Carolina (Nov. 7).

It’s games like these that will get Carter – and all the Huskies – noticed by NFL scouts. And that’s Carter’s goal – for himself and his family.
