Choosing the right university in Canada can feel overwhelming with so many options to consider, but a new ranking could help make the decision a little easier.

If you're looking for a university in Canada, the Times Higher Education (THE) has just released its World University Rankings by Subject for 2026. THE provides data and insight on higher education worldwide.

In its latest rankings, THE took a look at how universities around the world rank by subject and one Canadian university made it in the top 10. Categories include arts and humanities, business and economics, computer science, education studies, engineering, law, life sciences, medical and health, physical sciences, psychology, and social sciences.

"This year, we have evaluated 1,230 universities from 102 countries and territories, using the same 18 trusted and rigorous performance indicators as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, recalibrated to suit medical and health fields," the report states.

Only one university in Canada cracked the top 10.

For students looking to get into medical and health, the University of Toronto ranks number nine globally with an overall score of 88.2. It also earned top marks in several categories, particularly in research.

For research quality, U of T scored 80.2 for its "role in spreading new knowledge and ideas," while it scored 100 for innovations and inventions. It gets 96.6 for its research environment "based on research volume, income, and reputation."

The quality of the learning environment scored 89.7, and it also scored highly in terms of its ability to attract undergraduates, postgraduates, and faculty, with a score of 96.6.

And the university is massive, with over 80,000 full-time students, 39 per cent of whom are international students. Despite its scale, the university has an average of 25.1 students per staff.

Other Canadian universities ranked in this category include McGill University (27), University of British Columbia (31), McMaster University (42), University of Alberta (77), and University of Ottawa (89).
