Vance: "if You Screwed The American Taxpayer…"
Vice President JD Vance announced Monday that the Trump administration will prohibit about 870,000 people suspected of defrauding pandemic-era small business programs from receiving future loans from the federal government.
"If you screwed the American taxpayer, the federal government is now going to say you're cut off, no more, you shouldn't be applying anymore, and if you do apply, you're no longer able to get those benefits," he said in Kansas City, Missouri.
The vice president said the Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loan program, which were set up to help small businesses during the pandemic, had resulted in as much as $39 billion in fraud.
"As it happens with so many of the programs that are born out of the generosity of the American taxpayer, we had many, many people who took advantage of those programs," he said. "We think it makes sense that if you were caught stealing from the American taxpayer, you shouldn't be able to benefit from these loans anymore."
The Justice Department also announced that its fraud crackdown this summer resulted in actions against more than 160 defendants and uncovered about $245 million in intended losses to taxpayer.
