Home Health Workforce Adds 11,000 Jobs In August

Home health care employment continued to climb in August, accounting for most of the job growth across the broader healthcare sector.

The home health care services sector added approximately 11,000 jobs during the month, according to preliminary, seasonally adjusted data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Specifically, employment increased by 11,300 jobs from July to August, bringing the sector’s workforce to nearly 1.9 million.

Overall healthcare employment saw the addition of 13,000 jobs in August, according to the department. While the industry’s workforce continued to trend upward, growth was slower than the average monthly gain of 32,000 jobs recorded during the previous 12 months.

The gains came as total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 162,000 jobs nationwide. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1%.

Separate Labor Department projections updated on Aug. 27 also underscore the long-term demand for home-based care workers. Employment for home health and personal care aides is projected to grow 18% from 2025 to 2035, placing the occupation among the country’s 20 fastest-growing occupations.

However, home health and personal care aides had the lowest median compensation among the occupations on that list. Their median annual pay was $35,800 in 2025, according to the Labor Department.
