An uncle shares his heartwarming struggle of not knowing how to repay his nephew, who unexpectedly took care of all of their home maintenance that they hadn't been managing to get to while living with them after being priced out of his rent. The nephew refuses to take cash payment, which has forced his uncle to consider alternative ways of paying him back.

Where would we be without family?

When I first moved from the area where I grew up back to where my dad's family were, I was very fortunate to have their support. 

My girlfriend and I had, simply, been priced out of the city where we had both studied at university. Even with degrees, working entry-level jobs in a city where rent and the general cost of living were surging had become unmanageable. We simply weren't getting ahead and felt our lives stagnating.

So, we packed up and moved. We knew it would be hard, but it was admittedly harder than either of us anticipated. We had very little money to our name, especially after we had purchased my cousin's old car from him (at a generous family discount). Even though we tried to make it on our own as best we could, there were various points where we ended up staying with family for a time to make ends meet. 

We were, of course, appreciative of all the support we received at the time. But now that I have moved away from them again, I fully understand the value of having family's support. It, quite simply, is invaluable. It also provided priceless time with aunts and uncles. Allowing me to form adult relationships with those family members to whom I was just the nephew who had grown up far away…
