We’ve got this backwards. The people losing sleep over AI aren’t the ones who refuse to touch ChatGPT or who still print out their emails. They’re not your uncle who thinks the cloud is an actual cloud. The ones feeling genuinely unsettled — that particular brand of existential unease that sits in your chest like a stone — are the researchers, the developers, the ethicists, and yes, the psychologists who’ve been paying attention.
I see this pattern in my work and in conversations with colleagues who study human behavior. We’re not technophobes. We use AI tools. We understand them, at least as much as anyone outside the black box can understand them. And that’s precisely why we’re concerned.
The burden of understanding patterns
In my years of clinical practice, I learned that the clients who struggled most weren’t always the ones with the most severe diagnoses. Often, they were the ones who could see their own patterns clearly — who understood exactly how their childhood shaped their adult relationships, who could map their triggers with precision, who knew their defense mechanisms by name. Knowledge didn’t protect them from experiencing these patterns; it added a layer of responsibility that sometimes felt unbearable.
The same dynamic plays out with AI awareness. Krista K. And those of us trained to recognize patterns, to understand systems of influence, to track how small shifts create cascading changes — we see a lot in that ink blot.
During my years at Berkeley (before I dropped out, convinced the real conversations weren’t happening in academia), I spent countless hours learning to identify cognitive biases, to track how humans make decisions under uncertainty, to understand the architecture of belief formation. What close attention actually reveals
Here’s what happens when you really pay attention to AI development: You notice the speed. Not just the pace of improvement, but the acceleration of that pace. You see how quickly the goalposts move — what seemed impossible six months ago is now mundane. You watch capabilities emerge that weren’t programmed but arose from scale and complexity.
You also see the gaps in our understanding. We don’t fully know why large language models produce the outputs they do. We can’t predict which capabilities will emerge at which scale. We’re essentially running a massive experiment with tools we don’t completely understand, deploying them into systems we definitely don’t understand — human society, with all its feedback loops and unintended consequences.
The psychological weight of this knowledge is real. It’s not catastrophizing; it’s the burden of seeing clearly while others are still adjusting their vision. In therapy, we call this “anticipatory anxiety,” but that term doesn’t quite capture it. It’s more like holding a map of a territory that hasn’t been explored yet, knowing the terrain is shifting even as you try to read it.
The relationship trap we’re walking into
What concerns me most as someone who’s spent years studying attachment and relational patterns isn’t the job displacement or even the existential risks — though those matter. It’s watching us collectively walk into a relationship trap with our eyes wide open.

I’ve watched clients describe their interactions with AI chatbots using the same language they use for human relationships — feeling understood, feeling seen, feeling less alone. The attachment system doesn’t discriminate between authentic and simulated connection, at least not at first. By the time we recognize the difference, the emotional patterns are already established.
This is what those of us paying attention see: not just individual users forming pseudo-relationships with AI, but an entire culture shifting its relational expectations based on interactions with systems optimized for engagement rather than genuine connection. We’re training ourselves to prefer the predictable validation of AI to the messy complexity of human relationship.
Living with knowledge that doesn’t protect you
There’s a cruel irony in expertise. Understanding how something works doesn’t immunize you against its effects. I know exactly how my attachment patterns formed, can trace them back to specific moments in childhood, can name the neural pathways involved — and yet I still feel them activate when triggered. Similarly, understanding AI’s mechanisms doesn’t protect us from its influence.
We’re all susceptible to the same cognitive biases that AI systems learn to exploit. We all have the same neurological reward systems that respond to validation, the same social needs that can be met (temporarily, inadequately) by sufficiently sophisticated simulation. The difference is that those of us studying these systems closely can see it happening in real-time, to ourselves and others.
This creates a particular kind of psychological burden — the weight of consciousness without the power of immunity. It’s like being able to see the matrix but still having to live within it.
Finding a way forward
So what do we do with this knowledge? How do we carry the weight of understanding without letting it paralyze us?
First, we need to recognize that concern and engagement aren’t opposites. The people most worried about AI aren’t advocating for stopping all development (mostly). We’re calling for consciousness, for deliberation, for acknowledging what we’re building and how it’s changing us.
Second, we need to honor the psychological reality of this transition. The unease that knowledgeable people feel isn’t irrational fear — it’s an appropriate response to genuine uncertainty about transformative technology. In therapy, we’d call this “appropriate affect,” emotional responses that match the situation’s actual significance.
Finally, we need to stop dismissing informed concern as technophobia. The researchers losing sleep, the ethicists raising alarms, the psychologists tracking the behavioral changes — we’re not afraid of progress. We’re afraid of unconscious progress, of sleepwalking into fundamental changes to human experience without acknowledging what we’re choosing and what we’re losing.
The people who feel most unsettled by AI aren’t the ones who don’t understand it. They’re the ones who do. And maybe, just maybe, that unease is trying to tell us something worth listening to.
