Brock Purdy has earned plenty of praise during his time with the San Francisco 49ers; however, Raheem Morris came up with a different way to describe the quarterback.

The 49ers defensive coordinator recently explained why he prefers calling Purdy the “Appropriate Throw King” after initially referring to him as the “Layer King.” Morris has spent plenty of time watching Purdy work in practice and said the quarterback’s approach has stood out to him.

Morris made the comments while discussing his experience going against Purdy in practice. He said watching the quarterback operate up close has given him a better appreciation for how he handles the offense, communicates, and competes.

“Having the chance to be here and play against The Layer King, coach don’t like me calling him The Layer King, he’s The Appropriate Throw King, but to watch him every day in practice and watch the things he’s able to do, it’s unbelievable. To watch his process, to watch how gritty and tough he is, to watch the competitor that he is every single day in practice, I’ve been around Brock and I really enjoyed my time around him.”

The nickname is tied to what Morris has seen from Purdy as a passer. Rather than simply focusing on making difficult throws, Morris was impressed by the quarterback’s ability to make the right throw for the situation. That has also been reflected in how the veteran QB has operated during practice. Morris described him as someone who communicates with the coaches, takes command of the offense, and brings a competitive edge to the field.

Morris also pointed to Purdy’s intensity during practice as something that can affect the entire team.

For a quarterback entering his fifth NFL season, that experience gives Purdy another layer to his role with the 49ers. Morris has been around him before; however, getting to work against him regularly has offered a different perspective.

Purdy will now carry that reputation into a season that began with plenty of attention on San Francisco. The 49ers opened their 2026 campaign against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, with Morris beginning his first season as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Morris also praised Deebo Samuel while discussing the 49ers and spoke about the organization’s decision to travel to Australia early. The team made the trip roughly a week before the game to give itself more time to adjust to the unusual schedule and conditions.

For Purdy, though, Morris’ comments add another notable piece to the growing praise surrounding his work. The DC sees a quarterback who is not only capable of making throws but also understands when and where those throws need to go.
