Against All Odds - 94-year-old Woman Rescued Alive From An Earthquake-damaged Building In Pereira, Colombia
"A 94-year-old woman named Maria was rescued alive by emergency teams from inside a building damaged by the earthquakes in Pereira, Colombia, and taken to receive medical attention at a healthcare centre. Footage recorded on Wednesday shows paramedics from the Emergency Response System carrying the woman out on a stretcher from a building located on 30 de Agosto Street. Visibly confused, the woman asks "Where are we?" and, as she is being moved, her groans of pain and the expression "Oh Lord" can be heard. The woman remained inside the building for more than 48 hours. Due to structural damage, the property had to be completely evacuated and was declared uninhabitable. The rescue took place in Pereira, one of the cities most affected by the earthquakes. According to the city's latest official report, there are 83 dead, 279 people transported to medical centres, 85 injured under care, 243 people rescued and 45 missing. Nationally, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management reports 181 dead, 2,774 injured and impacts in 388 municipalities, as well as 20,557 homes damaged, 3,715 destroyed and 64 buildings collapsed. Local media, however, put the death toll at around 250."
