Thanks, Barry–and yep, this. I don’t love waking up on a Saturday wondering if I should publicly disclose personal financial information about my elder care commitments (at the cost of the dignity and privacy of the parties involved) to defend myself against a man on substack who has decided I shouldn’t get paid for taking on a demanding second job in writing my feminist newsletter.

The thing that really gets me? After speculating loudly, publicly, and incorrectly about my income, and questioning my feminism and ethics, he asked for a comped subscription.

I’ve never withheld a comp before, but again, here we are. If *you*, however, would like to subscribe to my newsletter, and would like a comped subscription, let me reiterate: I comp *almost* anyone who asks (i.e., non-trolls) with great pleasure, no questions asked. I initially never intended to go paid while I was salaried. But, in the Trump era, as I have stated, I don’t have a lot of faith that my day job will survive. And I never want to have to choose between compromising my feminist writing/teaching and supporting my family, including its most vulnerable members.

I’m proud of what I do–writing 2 to 3 posts a a week to 40k subscribers and regularly platforming more marginalized authors–and the good I do with my money. And I shouldn’t have to say any of this in order not to be subject to silly and unprofessional attacks.
