Card image cap

Ron Schlegel is being remembered as a visionary businessman, philanthropist, and community leader.

He passed away peacefully on Sept. 19 at the age of 83.

Schlegel’s impact can be seen across Waterloo Region and beyond in various sectors, including in elder care as the founder of Schlegel Villages.

A post on their website says, “Ron’s legacy is one of community-building and the constant quest to enhance the lives of those around him through a generous, philanthropic philosophy that knew no limits — a spirit that carries forth within the sons he leaves behind, Rob, Brad and Jamie, and their families.”

Ron was also a professor at the University of Waterloo where he spearheaded and supported many notable endeavours over his lifetime.

It includes the creation of the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging, which is described as a living testament to his spirit, generosity, and determination.

Waterloo Mayor Dorothy McCabe called Schlegel a “true barnraiser” and shared condolences on behalf of the city and council.

“His contributions to urban development, mental health and healthy aging continue to have an impact in Waterloo,” wrote McCabe in a statement.

Schlegel received a multitude of awards and recognitions both locally and nationally, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and was named an Officer of the Order of Canada.
