Independent Living Vs. Assisted Living Advice

Card image cap

Hi everyone,
My grandmother is 81 years old and living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. She has been living alone in her house for the last 10 years, but we have noticed some cognitive decline over the last 3 or so years.

It has officially come time to think about moving her into a care community, but we are having a hard time deciding between assisted living and independent living. We originally had her on the list for independent living, but we are now beginning to worry that she may be past that point.

She loves her independence and autonomy, which is why we were initially thinking about independent living. The pros are that she would be comfortable with her own apartment and wouldn’t have a significant loss of privacy. The cons are that she might decline enough to need assisted living pretty quickly, at which point we would have to move her again. She is also not very social, and we are worried that she won’t leave her apartment.

She is currently fine with:
Hygiene
Cooking
Cleaning
Remembering appointments
Familiar routines
She currently has issues with:
Paying bills
Math
Playing games
Finding words
Meeting new people / being in new places
Technology

Any advice or personal stories are more than welcome. Thank you all in advance!
