It's Time For "the Talk" With Mom And I Don't Know Where To Start

Appointments are getting canceled and not rescheduled. Bills are getting paid late. Documents, both important and junk mail, are getting lost. Multiple identical orders are being placed online without remembering that the stuff has already been ordered. Hearing the same things over and over (not fond "remember when Uncle Dave did xyz" stories, but conversations about this politician pulling out of the local race; that farm down the road being sold; was asked 3x if I had fun at a movie date I'd canceled, etc.). Have found the stovetop left on a few times after dinner. Has lost two CC in different grocery stores. Fell victim to a gift card scam earlier in the year. No longer walks her dog (has a safe, fenced yard for pottying). Has had a few falls but am not told until months down the line.

I know she wants to stay in her home but I don't see how she's going to continue managing her life safely this way. My husband and I are not amenable to moving in/moving her in with us, though I know she'd consider that the next best thing to staying by herself. Tomorrow starts the discussion about medical and financial POA, which she's more than willing to do. Tomorrow starts plans to call her doctor and neurologist to discuss cognitive testing.

I feel like I'm drowning. I don't know all the things to tackle or if there's a good order for them, or whether I want to be researching assisted living, independent living, or something else just to bring to the table for when the time comes that aging in place is no longer feasible.

Anyway, thanks for listening.
