Kitchen Safety Resources I Found Useful Working With An Aging Client, Sharing In Case Its Helpful
I support older adults who want to stay in thier homes and recently did a walkthrough of one of my clients kitchens with actual
safety in mind for the first time. Found way more issues than I expected in a house that looks completley normal.
A few resources that helped me think through it properly:
The AARP HomeFit Guide is a free 36 page illustrated guide specifically about making a home safer and more comfortable for aging
in place. Covers the kitchen, bathroom, entryways, all of it. You can download it directly at aarp.org/homefit
The CDC fall prevention page has a Falls Free CheckUp tool that helps you assess actual fall risk and gives you concrete next
steps. cdc.gov/falls
The NIA (National Institute on Aging) has a section on home safety for older adults that goes room by room. nia.nih.gov
None of the fixes we ended up making were expensive. Mostly storage reorganization, better lighting over the prep area and a
couple non slip mats by the sink. But having a proper framework to look through helped us see things we had just been walking
past.
Posting in case anyone else is supporting a client or family member who wants to stay independant at home.
