Need Tips For A Smoother Surgery Recovery
Hey Reddit, I (28 living in USA, access to vet but unable to take further time off work) have a cat Lenard (13 M neutered) who just had a splenectomy last Tuesday due to presence of mast cell tumors and unfortunately the vet confirmed that the bulge on his belly was, in fact, not a seroma but an intestinal hernia. He was a crackhead early on despite being prescribed gabapentin and we’re speculating that this all started the evening he got home from surgery.
Lenard is currently at the vet getting the earliest possible surgery to correct the hernia. They’re going to be putting him on a LOT more drugs (higher dose of gabapentin and adding in some trazodone). I’m picking him up after work and I’m so nervous about having a repeat event… I can’t handle another surgery for my poor baby.
We moved his recovery crate (large dog crate reinforced with plywood inside, covered in a blanket for a cave like effect… it’s almost fully dark in there) downstairs in the extra storage / man cave room. We are unable to give him an actual room to himself since every room has jumping hazards in it. We also installed a camera into the crate for remote monitoring of what he’s doing.
We ordered a bunch of supplies coming in today and tomorrow, today getting a shorter recovery litterbox and tomorrow getting some recovery suits to help him navigate better since he was extremely clumsy in his e-collar.
He’s going to need to be in the crate basically 24/7 with breaks for meals and cleaning. I have family around (mom and grandmother) who can help but my mom is going to be away Sunday to Saturday on vacation.
Does anyone have any tips for me to keep him calm cool and collected while he recovers for the next couple of weeks? How many times should I check in on him and hang out with him?
I’m so incredibly anxious and this is probably the worst dread that I’ve felt in my entire life since the start of this medical nightmare.
I can provide additional info if needed!
TLDR: 13 Male Neutered cat had a splenectomy 1 week ago, developed an intestinal hernia from overexertion (anesthesia wired him and he jumped up on some surfaces), got the hernia surgery today. Vet prescribed higher doses of gabapentin and added trazodone to sedate him for his 2wk recovery. Tips needed for helping with smoother, safer recovery. More info can be given upon request or just read above essay lol.
