Truckies rolling through New South Wales during this coming long weekend may be keen to pay extra attention when it comes to the road rules and enforcement with double demerit points in force for Labour Day.

Operation Labour Day will run from 12am, Friday, October 2 until 11:59pm Monday, October 5, 2026, with double demerits in effect during that time to ensure all motorists follow the road rules and drive safely.

The NSW State Government has warned police will be active on roads across the state, targeting the major contributors to road trauma including drink and drug driving, fatigue, mobile phone use, speeding and seatbelt and helmet offences.

Operation Labour Day will be led by officers from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, supported by general duties and specialist police from commands across the state.

The Labour Day long weekend also coincides with NSW school holidays and the NRL Grand Final, so there’s expected to be more motorists than usual on the road network.

So far 261 people have been killed on NSW roads this year, compared to 250 at the same time last year.

NSW Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley says too many lives have been shattered by road trauma.

“Every decision you make behind the wheel could mean the difference between life and death so slow down and obey the road rules,” Catley says.

“Police will be out in force this long weekend, targeting the major contributors to road trauma. If you break the law, you can expect to see red and blue flashing lights in your rear-view mirror.”

NSW Minister for Roads and Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison says the focus of the operation is to encourage all drivers to pay extra attention to their driving behaviour during a particularly busy period on the roads.

“It’s easy to think that driving a few kilometres over the speed limit will save you a few minutes, but the consequences can be fatal,” Aitchison says.

“We want everyone to enjoy the long weekend with family and friends, but most importantly, we want everyone to make it home safety.”

The double demerit point scheme applies for the following offences:

  • Speeding
  • Illegal use of mobile phones
  • Not wearing a seatbelt or incorrectly wearing a seatbelt
  • Driving with a passenger not wearing a seatbelt or approved restraint, or with a passenger incorrectly wearing a seatbelt or restraint
  • Riding without a helmet
