Do the 5 fitness tests for over 50s really measure how well you’re aging? I tried all five of Doctor Alex tests on camera, and one was ridiculous. Before you trust a “longevity test” with your health, see which results held up and which didn’t. In this video from My Longevity Experiment, I put Doctor Alex five at-home tests for adults over 50 to the real-world test: a stair climb for heart, lung and leg fitness, putting on shoes and socks while standing on one leg for balance, a carry test for strength, a floor-to-standing test for mobility, and press-ups for upper-body strength. I started skeptical, but trying them myself showed real merit in some and real flaws in others. So what do you actually learn about your health from each one? The stair climb checks how your heart, lungs and legs work together, and what “out of breath” should look like may surprise you. The balance test is where things get interesting, because a well-established medical assessment already exists: the single-leg stance test, which measures static balance, postural control and neuromuscular coordination through your visual, vestibular and proprioceptive systems. So why replace it with a shoe-and-sock challenge nobody does that way in daily life? Then comes the strength test, where “a fair way” and “heavy is subjective” don’t hold up. I break it down using SMART targets, with specific weight, distance and timing you can repeat, and I demonstrate it carrying two 50 kilo dumbbells over 24 metres. Grip strength, a known proxy for longevity, gets its own reality check, including why improving grip alone misses the point. The floor rise test, which checks leg strength, hip flexibility, balance and coordination, raises a practical question: if you fall, would you really get up without using your hands? Compare it with Dr. Peter Attia’s version, which allows one hand. Finally, the press-up test leans on a firefighter study of men under 50, so does it truly apply to women and men over 50? You’ll see me bang out ten press-ups on camera. If you care about fall prevention, healthy aging, strength training after 50 and honest, evidence-based longevity advice, this breakdown shows which fitness assessments for older adults are worth your time and which need a rethink. Every test is tried on camera, not just talked about. Expect honest results, not hype.
