Reolink Vs Tapo Cameras: Speed And Reliability Of Motion And Person Detection

Card image cap

I'm moving away from Ring cameras and will probably switch to either Reolink or Tapo. To get a feel for their apps and Home Assistant integrations I have purchased an entry-level camera from each brand: Reolink E1 (£30) and Tapo TC71 (£22). I'm am just using these entry-level camera for initial familiarisation. Once I decide which brand to go with I will spend more.

Aside from general home monitoring I'm particularly interested in using the cameras built-in motion and/or person detection in Home Assistant automations (which I can't really do effectively with Ring due to the cloud-dependence). For integration into Home Assistant I have used the official Reolink integration and the HACS Tapo Cameras Control integration.

To test detection performance, I setup both cameras side-by-side pointing at the entrance to a room and I walked into the room. I did multiple runs in two different rooms.

Here are some observations I made:

  • Speed of motion detection arriving in Home Assistant (based on Home Assistant sensor state change times) was approximately the same between cameras. Sometimes one was faster than the other but without a clear trend in either direction.
  • Person detection in Home Assistant invariably happened within 1-2 second of motion detection for the Tapo camera. This was often also true of Reolink, but there were also some occasions where Reolink person detection was delayed by 5-10 seconds relative to motion detection and relative to Tapo.
  • There were some occasions where the Tapo person detection sensor got stuck on "detected" even after person had left the room. To get it working again I had to reload the integration. This issue never happened with the Reolink integration.
  • Although I'm mainly interested in detection speed and reliability within Home Assistant, I also paid attention to the notification speed from the mobile apps, with phone connected to mobile internet rather than home wifi. Reolink app notification was always several seconds after the Tapo notification (typically 4-5 seconds later), and sometimes never arrived at all (even though sensor state changed occurred in Home Assistant).

I'm curious if anyone here has made either similar or contradictory observations, particularly using cameras which are above entry level. In particular:

  • Slower Reolink person detection compared to Tapo?
  • Unreliable clearing of Person detection sensor in Tapo Cameras Control?
  • Slower and less reliable Reolink app notifications compared to Tapo?

Thanks
