Travis Edward Lowe didn't leave Maryland police with much to work with. But he left enough for them to track him down.

Less than two days after Dakota Joseph Grimsby was fatally struck outside McDonald's in Poolesville, detectives say debris scattered at the crash scene, a tip from a resident, and a damaged pickup truck led them to the 26-year-old Frederick resident.

Lowe was arrested on Monday, Sept. 21, and charged in connection with the hit-run that killed Grimsby, 27, early Sunday morning.

Investigators got their first break from what the driver allegedly left behind.

Pieces of the vehicle recovered near Fisher Avenue and Milford Mill Road indicated that Grimsby may have been struck by a 2020-2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 or 3500, according to Montgomery County Police.

Detectives took that information into the community, distributing flyers throughout Poolesville as they searched for the truck.

Someone recognized what police were looking for.

A tip from a resident pointed investigators toward Lowe, police said, and detectives ultimately found a white Chevrolet Silverado with front-end damage at a business in Frederick.

Grimsby suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital, where he later died. The driver continued west on Fisher Avenue toward Elgin Road without remaining at the scene, investigators said.

Lowe was arrested in Frederick County and charged with failure to return and remain at a collision involving death, along with related traffic offenses.

He was taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit and was awaiting a bond hearing on Monday.

The fatal crash remains under investigation.
