Sharon Diane Edwards, 88, passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2026. Sharon was born in Speedway, Indiana. She attended Shortridge High School before pursuing her nursing degree at Indiana University School of Nursing. After graduating, she proudly worked at Evanston Hospital, often sharing stories of caring for patients in iron lungs and comforting those who were dying and alone. Her experiences reflected not pain and suffering but her dedication to providing care and compassion. While caring for his father after a heart attack at Evanston Hospital, Sharon met her future husband, Art Edwards. They married and moved to Glenview. She later wrote that she worked hard at being the perfect 1960’s housewife so that she could prove to Art that she was capable of being a housewife AND return to what she loved – nursing. After the birth of their first two children, the family relocated to Fort Worth, where their third child was born. As her children started school, Sharon sought volunteer opportunities to stay active. She served as a community helper, reading and math tutor for children facing traumatic life experiences, and acted as room mother for both her children and several special education classrooms. Eventually, she was appointed Vice President of the ISD volunteer board, overseeing the screening of over 70 elementary school children, and was actively involved in the Westcliff PTA. After 17 years away from nursing, Sharon finally returned to her calling, initially in home health nursing and later as a psychiatric nurse at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth for nine years. She was known for her unique ability to connect with patients, earning their trust and compliance through love and respect. In 1990, Sharon returned to graduate school, earning her Master of Social Work. She worked as a drug and alcohol counselor at FACTS while remaining a “weekend warrior” in the psychiatric ward at JPS until her retirement in 1999. After retiring, Sharon continued to volunteer until her husband was diagnosed with CML, after which she devoted herself to caring for him. Following Art’s passing, Sharon moved to independent living at CC Young in Dallas to be closer to her daughter. At CC Young, Sharon was cherished by all. She quickly engaged in Chair Yoga, Creative Writing, Boxing, and Drama Class. A dedicated bridge player, she continued her Friday afternoon games with her group from Fort Worth, refusing to miss them for anyone, even her daughter. She was appalled at the lack of bridge groups at CC Young, and so she established her own. Her bridge classes soon blossomed into beloved classes that fostered camaraderie among her neighbors. This club will carry on as “Sharon’s Bridge Club.” Sharon often spoke of the dear friends she made at CC Young and expressed concern for their well-being after her passing. Sharon was preceded in death by her husband, Art Edwards; and her daughter, Linda Edwards. She is survived by her loving son, Scott Edwards of Fort Worth; and daughter, Jennifer Edwards; along with her special nephew, Micah Buehler; grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, Lucas, and Sy Black; daughters-in-law, Kendal and Anna Black; and great-grandson, Elias Black of Dallas Texas. Sharon left behind a cherished quote: “People can be irrational, self-centered, and difficult. Love them anyway.” GREENWOOD FUNERAL HOME Greenwood Funeral Homes – Cremation 3344 White Settlement Road, Fort Worth 76107 817-336-0584
