Skn Pm Media Tour Highlights Renovation Of Healthcare Pillar, The Cardin Home

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN)—During his recent official media tour stop at the Cardin Home in July, 2026, Prime Minister Hon. Dr Terrance Drew announced that the facility is undergoing its largest financial investment in nearly a century.

The tour highlighted the transformation the historic 1927 elder-care facility ahead of its 100th anniversary milestone in May 2027 in ungoing.

“It’s a home that of course serve the vulnerable members of our community and it has been carrying out this for almost 100 years now. Next year will make 100 years. However, we have taken to make sure that we refurbish this institution and make it modern. It has been part of our commitment and part of the commitment of the MP who would speak in a few minutes with respect to making sure that this is comfortable for those who have to come here. It has been adopted by His Majesty’s prison so we have persons from His Majesty’s prison who are here. They are skilled workers and so they have adopted it to refurbish it and then also to maintain it. Never again will the carding home be a deteriorated institution to host the most vulnerable of our community. Those days are over.”

Minister of Parliament for St. Chritopher 3, Hon. Konris Maynard emphasised that the renovations are more than just physical for the Cardin Home.

“Every resident can be a resident here in comfort. They deserve to be in comfort. They deserve to have a facility that they can enjoy and the overhaul what you’re seeing, yes you’re seeing the physical work and the construction work but it goes far beyond that. It’s about the landscaping, it’s about improving the staff, it’s about improving the services that the carding home would offer and so it’s a wholesome renovation rehabilitation especially to mark the 100th anniversary and to also keep the commitment of the St. Christopher’s Labour Party-led administration.”

Minister Maynard expressed gratitude to His Majesty’s Prison for the collaboration on renovating the home.

“It is important also to thank His Majesty’s prison who is collaborating with the public works department to make this a very unique project where we can accomplish a whole host of things. One, the rehabilitation, yes the refurbishments, yes but we’re also utilising the skills of persons at His Majesty’s prison integrating an opportunity for them to further their skills even as they rehabilitate themselves and also in collaboration with public works to ensure that this is a cost-effective approach to this renovation project. So this is overall a win-win for everybody, the country, for the people it serves, for the constituency here and just for everybody in general and so I want to thank all of the administrators involved in ensuring that this gets done and we look forward to its completion as we celebrate 100 years of service from the carding home.”

Minister of Social Development & Gender Affairs; Youth Empowerment, Ageing & Disabilities, Hon. Isalean Phillip spoke of the importance of the work being done on the Cardin Home, and its impact on the community.

“It’s really good to see the work that is being done here at the carding home, as mentioned it is a vital institution particularly when it comes to our social protection as part of our social protection ecosystem as one of the seven pillars of our SISA. It’s important for us to make sure that we have facilities like these especially for our seniors and vulnerable persons to get the care that they need. Often times we do get a lot of calls in the ministry, age and departments among persons looking for bed spaces for seniors. We partner a lot with the hospital because unfortunately sometimes we have seniors who are left to deal and so this institution is absolutely integral and vital to our ability to be able to support and protect those who really need spaces and support. So we want to commend the ministry of health and of course we continue to collaborate with them to make sure that we have the standards and the regulations for care because of course communities of care is part and parcel of the SISA and of course PM Drew’s vision for St. Kitts and Nevis.”

Work is being done on the four buildings housing residents, splitting updates between two female and two male wings, which include roof repairs on the lower female wing, rewiring of electrical grids, newly engineered plumbing systems, and extensive woodwork and carpentry, fully replaced flooring, repaired wall structures, and modern windows.

The facility’s physical therapy wing and the medical sickbay are slated for modern expansions.

Upgrades extend directly to the core service centres, including the main kitchen, resident dining areas, and laundry facilities.

The work is expected to be completed before the health institution’s 100th anniversary in May 2027.
