Supporting Family/relatives
Hello all! I am a 34 year old Chinese-American non-binary person who still very much identifies as "Eldest Immigrant Daughter."
Can we discuss supporting family members financially (money) or physically (providing childcare, eldercare, or housing) in our 30s?
Some questions to consider:
- What are the expectations from your family/friends/partners/children in terms of how much you are able to offer? What do you want to be able to offer?
- What % of your salary is dedicated to your family/relatives? Do you send them money or pay for services/bills?
- Are you a first-generation immigrant, college-student, etc.?
- Do these expectations weigh on you, and how do you feel about their weight?
- Are you able to talk to friends and family about your finances?
- Do you work in a specific field or industry in order to support yourself and your loved ones? Did you get into the industry over something that might bring you more personal fulfillment like a creative job?
- Did/were your parents able to retire or plan for retirement?
