Changing The Way We Talk About Mental Illness | Steph Ng | Tedxdbshk Youth
We view the way of battling mental health problems like a fairytale — flowers, rainbows; a story with an easy resolution. Steph Ng tells us the opposite, how the way we approach mental health stories should be changed and most importantly, how we are being too nice with these stories. Steph Ng is an award-winning mental health advocate, educator, and Ph.D. researcher. Informed by her lived experiences in eating disorder recovery, Steph’s research and advocacy work integrates the relatability of personal narrative with the rigor of empirical insight. Her PhD research explores how stories of mental health struggle can be transformed into powerful advocacy tools to destigmatize mental illness in Hong Kong society. Her advocacy work takes diverse formats, ranging from empowering youth in Hong Kong to spark conversations about body image through her mental health charity Body Banter, to authoring “Big Bites Break Boundaries”, a memoir that recounts her personal experiences with an eating disorder and her professional experiences in Hong Kong’s mental health landscape. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
