Mismo Publishes Alta Title And Settlement Datasets For Review

The Mortgage Industry Standards Maintenance Organization (MISMO) announced Tuesday that it has published two new title and settlement data standards in candidate recommendation status: the ALTA Title Policy Dataset and the ALTA Settlement Statement Dataset.

Developed in partnership with the American Land Title Association (ALTA), the datasets map ALTA’s widely used title and settlement forms to MISMO’s data standards.

Candidate recommendation status means the datasets are available for industry review and implementation while MISMO gathers feedback from early adopters. That process typically precedes elevation to a final standard, a step that many investors, vendors and larger lenders watch closely when planning technology road maps.

The groups say the work creates a common digital framework that can be adopted by lenders, title companies, settlement agents, servicers and technology providers.

The new standards allow title and settlement information to move as digital data rather than paper documents, improving accuracy and reducing manual workloads. The framework is designed to enhance interoperability across platforms, minimize errors and delays, and support smoother closings and servicing transfers.

“These new datasets represent the strength of the partnership between ALTA and MISMO and our shared commitment to modernizing the exchange of title and settlement information,” said Steve Gold, associate counsel and senior director of products at ALTA and co-chair of MISMO’s Title and Closing Community of Practice.

“By aligning ALTA’s trusted forms with MISMO’s data standards, we are giving lenders, title companies and technology providers a common digital framework that enables the industry to reduce friction, improve data quality and support a more modern, efficient closing experience.”

The work was carried out by MISMO’s Title & Closing Docs to Data Development Workgroup under the leadership of Bryan Bedard, chair and executive at Rocket Close.

MISMO said the group’s direction, along with input from a broad set of industry participants, focused on solving real operational issues and supporting consistent implementation across the mortgage ecosystem.

For lenders and title providers evaluating technology investments, the new datasets may influence requirements for document prep, closing platforms, loan origination system integrations and post-closing quality control, as vendors update systems to natively support MISMO-aligned ALTA data.
