Area Residents Invited To Flood Risk Workshop In Lisbon
LISBON—St. Lawrence County residents are invited to learn about their flood risk and new flood maps at an open house hosted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) July 22 at Lisbon Town Hall.
Attendees may visit the open house any time between 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Lisbon Town Hall, 6963 county Route 10 Lisbon.
The FEMA Open House meetings on flood risk and insurance will allow community members can learn more about their flood risk and the recently revised flood maps.
FEMA representatives will be present to answer questions about flood risk, flood insurance and ways to prepare for and protect against flooding. All are welcome to join.
On April 10, FEMA released a preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for St. Lawrence County for the public to see and comment on. The new map gives updated information about the community's flood risk. It will be used to find areas where flood insurance coverage may be required.
Some areas of the preliminary FIRM show major flood hazard changes from the maps that are in effect now.
FEMA, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and St. Lawrence County officials invite residents of St. Lawrence County to learn how they may be affected and what they can do to protect themselves.

There will be no formal presentation, at the July 22 open house, attendees may arrive and depart at any time. Attendees are asked to bring their flood insurance declaration page, if available.
A second open house will be held Thursday, July 23 at the Tupper Lake Library.
The meeting will inform community members about the purpose, benefits, and timeline of the mapping project, the flood zones on the new maps and what they mean, and local flood risks and the resources available from the state and FEMA to reduce risk.
The event will also feature information on how map changes will affect the requirements for insurance and building. The value of flood insurance and ways to obtain a policy, and the appeal and comment process.
Community members will also have the opportunity to learn about the benefits of mitigation, as well as what the county and state are doing to mitigate flood risk.
Attendees cannot buy flood insurance at the open house. Find an agent at FloodSmart.gov.
Community members may also formally appeal information that is on the new maps, and learn more about the appeals process at the July 22 event.
